Ayotte Backs Resolution to Punish Russia for Recent Military Aggression

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), an Armed Services Committee member, announced today that she's backing a Senate resolution that reaffirms support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine and condemns Russia's military invasion in the Ukrainian territory of Crimea. The resolution proposes sanctions as well as other measures to compel Putin to respect Ukraine's sovereignty and end Russia's invasion of Crimea.

The bipartisan resolution, led by Senator Dan Coats (R-IN), seeks to isolate and punish Russia by:
* Expelling Russia from the G-8;
* Suspending the Russia-NATO Council and expelling Russian representation in NATO;
* Downgrading U.S. diplomatic representation with the Russian Federation;
* Closing two U.S. Consulates General in Russia;
* Requiring Russia to take reciprocal steps to close its Consulates in the U.S.;
* Expanding the list of sanctioned individuals covered under the Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012;
* Encouraging FIFA to reconsider its decision to place World Cup 2018 matches in Russia; and
* Suspending temporary or seasonal work visas for Russians.
