I'm fortunate to be the product of some of our nation's best public and private schools, so I recognize how education can transform someone's future. America has always been a land of opportunity, and nowhere have we traditionally built sturdier ladders to success than in our classrooms. But too often today, a child's future is determined by his or her zip code rather than his or her work ethic. This has to change. We must demand more creativity, more accountability, and more results from both our schools and ourselves.

I believe in an education reform movement that sees teachers as partners rather than as adversaries--one that remembers that teachers are the exact people who have dedicated their lives to the crucial work of educating our next generation. My sister is a public school teacher, and I know how hard and passionately she works every day. I believe we should encourage new education models and increase accountability in our public schools in a way that's focused on results. And I believe that there isn't any contradiction between valuing our teachers and putting our kids first--as the vast majority of our teachers already do.
