Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. signed a petition today that would force consideration of H.R. 1010 -- the Fair Minimum Wage Act. He offered the following comment:

"Sacramento County families want and deserve an economy that works for everyone, where a hard day's work earns a decent day's pay, and everyone has the opportunity to build a better future. Right now, minimum wage workers, people like nursing home workers and daycare providers who take care of us, oftentimes do not earn enough to care for the people they love. That's just wrong. If we raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, we can restore fairness for working men and women, and make sure no one who works full time lives in poverty. A higher minimum wage is good for our economy, good for our hardworking families, and good for our country's long-term growth."

The Fair Minimum Wage Act increases the federal minimum wage over three years from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour, indexes future annual increases to inflation thereafter, and gradually increases the tipped minimum wage to 70 percent of the minimum wage.
