Issue Position: Balancing the Budget

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

Washington DC has a spending problem.

How long have we heard this line from our politicians? Each election we hear politicians railing against excessive spending, but once in Washington, DC we see little action.

Something has to change. We're now more than $17 trillion in debt -- and it is only getting worse.

Send a Budget Expert To Congress

Carl DeMaio is a nationally-recognized budget expert. As a city councilmember, DeMaio read the entire city's budget and reviewed it line by line. He found millions in wasteful spending, and proposed new ways to deliver services in each department. DeMaio authored the landmark Roadmap to Recovery Budget that showed that we could balance the city's budget without tax increases and still improve services, rather than gut and cut them.

More importantly, DeMaio has a record of bringing Democrats and Republicans together to implement his budget reforms. We need a Congressman who can actually read a budget, spot the waste, and offer common-sense solutions both political parties can agree on.

Performance Audits for Every Program

The American people deserve to get results from their hard-earned tax dollars. DeMaio played a key role in the implementation of the Government Performance and Results Act -- which requires every government program to measure and report performance to Congress. Unfortunately, these performance reports are largely ignored. As a Congressman, DeMaio will be the taxpayers' watchdog to shine a light on these reports and demand accountability for results from every government program.

Transform How Government Works: Doing More With Less

The private sector has done it. San Diego's working families do it to. In lean times, we need to rethink how things are done so we get the biggest bang for the buck.

Carl DeMaio built a career out of analyzing government programs to identify cost efficiencies and performance improvements. Improvements can be made in every government program -- saving taxpayers money and improving services. We cannot balance the budget simply by adopting a "gut and cut" mentality. That's why as our Congressman, Carl DeMaio will look for ways to reform government programs to do more with less and find solutions that make government work better.

No Budget, No Pay -- For Real

Washington politicians talk the talk, but they don't walk the walk. Congress should do the job the American people elected it to do: pass a budget on time. If Congress cannot pass a budget on time, the members should permanently forfeit their salary for each and every day they fail to pass a budget.
