Peters Statement on President Obama's Decision to Drop Chained CPI Proposal from 2015 Budget

Today, U.S. Rep. Gary Peters released the following statement in response to the White House announcement that President Obama will not be including Chained CPI (Consumer Price Index) in his 2015 budget proposal:

"Seniors in Michigan and across the country deserve to retire with dignity. They have worked their entire lives, paid into Social Security and have earned their guaranteed benefits. I have opposed using a chained CPI to calculate these benefits because this proposal would result in a difficult cut for our nation's seniors. Social Security is the most effective anti-poverty program in our nation's history and a vital program that we must protect and fight to strengthen.

"We must work together to continue reducing our deficits in a balanced, responsible way, but we can't balance our budget on the backs of seniors."
