Cassidy Supports Legislation to Protect Olympic Medal Winners from Taxes

Statement

Date: Feb. 18, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Bill Cassidy, M.D. joined with Representative Blake Farenthold (R-TX) in supporting H.R. 3987, the Tax Exemptions for American Medalists (TEAM) Act. The bill would exempt U.S. Olympic athletes from paying taxes on medals and prizes awarded to them at the Olympic Games. Dr. Cassidy released the following statement:

"It's stupid to tax the medals our Olympic athletes won. They represent America as ambassadors as well as superior competitors in their sports. Medal winners in particular are a source of pride to us all. The last thing we should do as a government is send them a bill from the IRS when they return home."
