Blog: Equal Pay for Equal Work

Statement

Dear Friend,

Over the past few years, Americans have worked together to pull ourselves out of a significant economic downturn. With a determined spirit and an unwavering commitment to succeed, we forged ahead. Unfortunately, many of the hardest working Americans are seeing their hard work go unrewarded.

Despite the passage of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, a gender gap still exists in this country. Women make up nearly half of the nation's labor force but earn 23 percent below their male counterparts. This means that women make only 77 cents on the dollar compared to similarly qualified men. Yet, in 6 out of 10 families, women are the primary or co-breadwinner.

This wage gap makes a huge difference in a family's economic security and significantly undermines our nation's economy. Women and men contribute equally to their workplaces and both should be given the equal opportunity to provide for their families. Our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends deserve better and I will stand with my colleagues in Congress to work to ensure they receive the equal pay they deserve.

As always, please contact my office if I may be of assistance to you.

Regards,

André
