WASHINGTON -- U.S. Representative Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) has cosponsored bipartisan legislation to halt cuts to the Army National Guard, reaffirming the importance of the Guard to helping Americans in need.
"While we work to cut federal spending, we must make sure our national security is not threatened by detrimental cuts to the military. The West Virginia National Guard plays an important role overseas and at home, as we have seen during the recent water crisis, and I am proud to stand in support of their mission. By halting imminent cuts to the Army National Guard, Congress will have time to fully examine the needs and priorities of our Army," Rep. Capito said.
"The recent emergency response to West Virginia's water crisis validates the need for a robust National Guard force structure. It is imperative the National Guard remain a reliable, capable force able to respond both at home and abroad in support of our national security as outlined in the Constitution," said Major General James Hoyer, adjutant general of West Virginia.
H.R. 3930, the National Commission on the Structure of the Army Act, would maintain the Army National Guard's end strength at 350,000, freeze the transfer and divestiture of Army aircraft, and form a commission to make recommendations on the force structure of the Army.
The bill, introduced by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), has 46 additional cosponsors.
