Rep. Peters Helps Introduce Measure to Improve Transparency & Accountability in Federal Elections

Today, U.S. Rep. Gary Peters helped introduce The Government by the People Act, which works to improve transparency in our democratic process and prevent outside spending from dominating elections.

"For Michiganders, and all Americans, their vote should speak louder than their wallet, but the outsized influence of dark money and outside special interest groups in our elections has tampered with our democracy," Peters said. "I believe this measure takes a responsible step in the right direction to preserve the founding principles of our nation. Michiganders deserve to have their needs represented and fought for in Washington."

Peters was joined by 126 other members to put forward the initiative that would create tax credits for small-donor contributions. The bill also creates a matching program, the Freedom from Influence Fund, for these individual, small donor contributions to empower broad-based support from small donors.
