Three bills from U.S. Congressman Sean Duffy (WI-07) were considered during a House Committee on Financial Services markup this week. All of the bills considered focused on reforms to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), including H.R. 2571, the Consumer Right to Financial Privacy Act of 2013. Rep. Duffy released a statement following committee passage of the bills:
"When the Federal government collects and monitors information on Americans, especially when there is little or no justification for it, it really makes Americans mad." Rep. Duffy continued, "If the CFPB wants to collect, retain and monitor information on Americans, they have to get their permission."
Rep. Duffy further emphasized the need for his legislation calling it, "the ultimate consumer protection", saying that the agency should, "allow Americans to have direct control of their information when it relates to their government." H.R. 2571 passed committee Thursday morning. During that same markup, two additional bills from Rep. Duffy were also considered and approved. H.R. 2385, CFPB Pay Fairness Act of 2013 would reform from the current bloated pay scale structure to a more traditional federal pay model, and also, H.R. 3193, Consumer Financial Protection Safety and Soundness Improvement Act of 2013 would give financial regulators better ability to overrule CFPB regulations that might be harmful to Wisconsin's community banks and credit unions.
