Rep. Peters: Congress Must Act without Delay to Extend Emergency Unemployment Insurance Benefits

Today, after the U.S. Senate took an important step forward to extend unemployment benefits, U.S. Representative Gary Peters (MI-14) released the following statement on the need for the House to take immediate action to extend unemployment insurance.

"Extending unemployment insurance is an investment with a proven economic return, and it is the right thing to do for Michigan families. The economic recovery has been fragile and there are too many folks still struggling to support their families as they look for work. Congress must act without delay to extend emergency unemployment insurance benefits."

More than 43,000 people in Michigan who are still struggling to find work, and over 1.3 million nationally, have lost their unemployment insurance since benefits expired on December 28th of last year. Allowing unemployment insurance to expire is estimated to cost the economy over 200,000 jobs.
