Michaud & Pingree Announce $100 Million for DDG-51 Destroyer Contract

Representatives Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree have announced that an omnibus spending bill just unveiled by House and Senate negotiators includes $100 million for a contract to build DDG-51 destroyers at Bath Iron Works (BIW).

The Pentagon has signed a multi-year deal to build 10 DDG-51s, with the work evenly divided between BIW and a shipyard in Mississippi. However, sequestration cuts left the tenth ship in that contract at risk, with the Navy coming up $100 million short in construction funds. The funding announced today eliminates this funding shortfall.

"This funding is critical to the future work of the shipyard," said Michaud and Pingree, who wrote earlier this month to House Appropriations Committee leaders requesting the funding. "Eliminating this shortfall will help maintain the Navy's readiness, and it's yet another endorsement of the outstanding work being done by our shipbuilders in Bath."
