Van Hollen Urges Immediate Extension of Unemployment Benefits

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement urging the immediate extension of unemployment benefits:

"First, House Republicans went home for Christmas knowing that over a million Americans would lose their unemployment benefits. Then the GOP headed out of town again -- over Martin Luther King Jr. Day, no less -- despite the fact that every week they block an extension, 72,000 more men and women are left in the cold. As of today, 1.6 million job seekers have been cut off from unemployment insurance. Enough is enough.

"Congress must act immediately to extend unemployment insurance. Doing so won't just help families keep food on the table and a roof over their heads -- it will also help promote economic growth. Republicans' refusal to act in the best interest of all Americans on this issue is simply unconscionable."
