Van Hollen: IRS Lawsuit Unnecessary with New 501(c)4 Regulations

Statement

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement to announce that his lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is no longer necessary in light of the IRS' new regulations on 501(c)4 organizations:

"The IRS should have never been in the business of determining how much political activity 501(c)4 organizations could engage in -- the plain reading of the law says that these groups should operate "exclusively' social welfare activities. Our lawsuit against the IRS was designed to compel it to develop new regulations on this question, and today we are moving to dismiss this lawsuit in light of the Administration's willingness to address the rules that govern these organizations.

"Last election cycle, 501(c)4 organizations were exploited to funnel millions of dollars of secret money into campaigns. We must put an end to the flow of this secret money, and I will closely monitor the progress of the Treasury Department and the IRS to ensure they establish clear rules that are consistent with the law. The public has a right to know who is spending millions to influence the outcome of our elections."
