Rep. Schneider Cosponsors Bill to Enhance Community and Family Engagement to Improve Education

Press Release

Date: Jan. 15, 2014
Issues: K-12 Education

U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider (IL-10) cosponsored the DIPLOMA Act (HR 2237) to authorize competitive grants to strengthen educational achievement through increased community and family engagement in disadvantaged or low-achieving areas and schools.

"Every student deserves the opportunity for a high-quality education, irrespective of their zip code, and this bill encourages families and communities to work together to achieve that goal," Schneider said. "These grants will improve and augment in-school instruction, as well as support critical out-of-school programs like crime prevention and health services. By working together, our communities can lift up struggling schools and ensure each student's opportunity for a bright future."

The bill draws partly on the Chicago Public Schools' Community Schools Initiative, seeking to coordinate the activities of schools, families, local educational agencies and community organizations.
