Rep. Schneider Announces Support for Bipartisan Budget Deal

U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) announced his support today for Congressman Paul Ryan's (R-WI) and Senator Patty Murray's (D-WA) bipartisan budget deal.

"I came to Congress to move this country forward, and the budget deal helps do just that," Schneider said. "While far from perfect, it represents a good faith effort to provide our businesses, families and communities with the stability and certainty that's been sorely lacking from Washington. The deal isn't a solution to our biggest challenges, and it doesn't extend critically important unemployment benefits, but it does avert another irresponsible government shutdown, replace a portion of the harmful sequester cuts and invest in core initiatives like infrastructure and research and development that help our economy grow."

The deal provides a budget for the next two fiscal years, setting overall discretionary spending for the current fiscal year at $1.012 trillion, halfway between the House budget level of $967 billion and the Senate budget level of $1.058 trillion. It provides $63 billion in sequester relief over two years that will be split between defense and non-defense programs and reduces the deficit by between $20 and $23 billion.

Rep. Schneider, a member of the House Small Business Committee, has long called for a sensible budget that gives certainty to our small businesses and has been vocal about his opposition to the harmful sequester cuts. He was also active in calling for an end to the unnecessary government shutdown in October and returned his salary for the duration of the 16-day shutdown.
