This evening, at the request of Rep. Joe Garcia and Rep. Jared Polis, several House Representatives joined in a Special Order on the House floor, seeking a meaningful discussion on comprehensive immigration reform. Rep. Garcia highlighted the story of a young boy from his district, Charlie, who wrote a letter describing the devastating effects of a broken family, urging Congress to pass a bill.
"Disagreement is no reason for inaction. There is no reason why families, like Charlie, must be torn apart. There is no reason why children, like Charlie, must suffer the consequences of our failed immigration system and face the holidays without his father" said Rep. Joe Garcia.
As the year draws to a conclusion, Rep. Garcia hoped to reignite the conversation on immigration reform. On Monday, Garcia issued a letter to colleagues, inviting them to participate in the Special Order. While there was a large Democratic presence, and many members of the immigration community sat in support in the House Gallery, no Republican House members showed up.
Congressman Garcia is the principal sponsor on the H.R. 15 bill and has lead various efforts in an attempt to bring it to the floor for a vote.
