U.S. Representative Gary Peters Statement on Iran

Statement

Date: Nov. 22, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Affairs

In response to the ongoing P5+1 Talks in Geneva and the announcement by Majority Leader Harry Reid that the U.S. Senate may soon act on new bipartisan sanctions, U.S. Representative Gary Peters issued the following statement:

"It is critical that the United States use every tool at its disposal to ensure that Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon. That is why I have voted for stronger sanctions, and it is why I support diplomatic efforts to make Iran abandon its nuclear weapon program. While we all want to see a peaceful settlement from the current negotiations and the dismantling of Iran's nuclear weapon program, we need to see concrete actions from the Iranians and in the interim it is important that Congress ensures that the President has the tools to ensure this result. Preventing a nuclear Iran is critical for our national security, for the stability of the region, and for the safety of our allies--especially Israel. Sanctions and negotiations are the best tools to ensure this goal is achieved and achieved peacefully."
