Statement

Issues: Foreign Affairs

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement on the first step agreement on Iran's nuclear program:

"This is a very important first step toward the goal of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. It is essential that we test this diplomatic approach to achieving this goal without a rush to war.

"President Obama deserves credit for unifying the international community around the stiff sanctions that brought Iran to the negotiating table. Under this interim agreement, Iran must halt or scale back parts of its nuclear program while we pursue a comprehensive deal. If Iran cheats, it will face even stiffer sanctions. Don't trust, but verify again and again."
