Horsford Votes To Protect Nevadans From Predatory Insurance Plans

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) released the following statement after voting against legislation proposed by Representative Fred Upton (MI-6):

"I voted against the Upton bill because it does nothing to make the Affordable Care Act (ACA) work, and in fact, makes it worse. The bill allows health insurers to continue selling predatory health insurance plans that have high deductibles, high out-of-pocket costs and provide very little coverage. The ACA is not perfect, but Congress must work to fix the law, not undermine it.

"Speaker Boehner has called for "targeted strikes' against the ACA, what we need are "targeted fixes.' I will continue to find ways to make the ACA work.

"Insurance companies should not be able to hide the coverage gaps in the plans they offer. Nevadans know far too well what happens when consumers fall prey to predatory policies that hide important details in the fine print. The action taken by the administration will require insurance companies to magnify the fine print on these policies and allow state insurance commissioners the flexibility to extend plans through 2014 as consumers shop for new coverage options.

"I support the commonsense steps taken by the administration to hold insurance companies accountable. Instead of voting 47 times to defund or weaken the ACA, it is time for members of Congress to stop the games and brinkmanship and come together to make healthcare work."
