U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) joined a group of eight veterans on a tour of Des Plaines-based manufacturer Iverson and Co. today to see firsthand how a local veterans program is working to boost manufacturing and connect veterans with potential employers. The Veterans Rapid Employment Initiative is a program designed to help recently-discharged veterans start careers in the manufacturing industry.
"The growing skills gap we see in our workforce threatens our ability to compete and for too many of our veterans, they're coming home to too many obstacles to good jobs and quality career opportunities," Schneider said. "Expanding our manufacturing base is critical to growing our economy and helping our veterans start careers in manufacturing is a winning strategy for everyone. I am thrilled about the many new opportunities this local initiative can create to get our veterans back to work and provide our manufacturers with much-needed skilled workers."
A member of the House Small Business Committee, Schneider is a champion of workforce development and expanding economic opportunity. Last week, Schneider introduced the LEARN Act to expand On-the-Job training programs. In February, Schneider introduced the AMERICA Works Act to close the skills gap by bringing educators and industry leaders together to provide our workforce with in-demand skill sets. He also hosted a jobs fair in August with a special component specifically for veterans.
