House Budget Committee Passes Federal Budget

Diaz-Balart Applauds Funding of National Priorities, Commitment to Halve Deficit
WASHINGTON-The House Budget Committee today passed the federal budget - providing the fiscal blueprint for the nation's needs and priorities. The bill now goes to the House floor for a vote.

"President Bush continues to show the will to make responsible fiscal decisions, and Congress needs to follow his example," said Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.), a member of the House Budget Committee. "It would be easy, but irresponsible, to raise taxes and spend even more taxpayer money, as the Democrats proposed. In Committee, I helped defeat Democrat amendments which would have totaled more than $392 billion in tax increases and more than $61 billion in additional spending. Clearly, when the budget is more than $2.5 trillion even with spending restraint, there is too much money in Washington.

"This budget closely follows President Bush's fiscal leadership. He provided us a fiscally responsible blueprint of our nation's needs - especially regarding the areas of defense and homeland security. We will continue to work with President Bush to make sure our nation's priorities are properly funded while remaining committed to halving the deficit in five years."
