Sen. Cruz: Families of Those Killed at Benghazi Deserve Answers

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today sent a letter to his Senate colleagues requesting their support for a Joint Select Committee to investigate the September 11, 2012 Benghazi attacks. Sen. Cruz included letters of support from Pat Smith and Michael Ingmire, the mother and uncle of Sean Smith, the Foreign Service Officer killed in the Benghazi attacks.

"We have four Americans killed in the line of duty," Sen. Cruz said. "The State Department's internal Accountability Review Board report has left Congress with fundamental questions unanswered. It is well past time for Congress to do its job and investigate what happened at Benghazi. The families of those killed at Benghazi deserve answers to their questions. We all do. I hope you will consider joining me, and 24 other Senate colleagues, as a co-sponsor of Sen. Res 225."

Sen. Cruz first announced his resolution on September 12, 2013, but his request for unanimous consent to introduce and pass the measure was blocked from consideration by Democrats.

"It is time for the establishment of a Bipartisan Independent Joint Select Committee on Benghazi. Pat Smith, myself, and the other family members of the Benghazi murder victims deserve and demand your attention to this matter," Michael Ingmire wrote. "While there has been some progress via the various committees, some of the most obvious questions I have about what happened in Benghazi have yet to be answered."

"I am absolutely for this resolution," Pat Smith wrote. "I have been asking everyone who would listen to please tell me why my son Sean Smith had to die in a blazing inferno in an outpost in Benghazi, Libya with no security and no hope of the arrival of any help. The State Department has not explained these things to me."
