As a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), I am a strong supporter of the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Throughout my 17 years in Congress, I have consistently voted against reckless gun control measures. The U.S. Constitution states very plainly, " the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." I remain fully committed to protecting this right.
Some Americans -- including President Obama -- have recently called for stricter gun regulations citing recent tragedies like the Newtown, Connecticut elementary school shooting. Further restricting our right to bear arms is not the solution to putting a stop to crimes like these. Instead, we should focus on enforcing the law and vigorously prosecuting those who break it.
Adding onerous restrictions through additional gun control only serves to punish those of us who adhere to our nation's laws. Additional gun control would also prevent law abiding citizens from not only exercising our constitutional rights, but also from protecting ourselves and our families.
