Bera Praises Passage of Water Resources Development Act

Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. praised the House of Representatives' passage of the Water Resources Development Act. He offered the following comment:

"I applaud the House's bipartisan passage of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) today, which is a critical step toward funding sorely-needed flood protection priorities in the Sacramento region, including federal authorization of the Natomas Levee Improvement Project (NLIP) to rebuild our crumbling levees. The bill will strengthen our country's infrastructure and help improve our economy.

I am also pleased that WRDA includes a provision similar to the Levee Vegetation Review Act, which I co-sponsored with Congresswoman Matsui to address issues with policies that deal with vegetation on levees. I'm thankful to Ms. Matsui, and Senator Boxer for their leadership on Sacramento-area water issues and championing this WRDA bill."

The Sacramento region is has the second highest flood risk in the United States, behind only the New Orleans metropolitan area. A flood in the Sacramento region would be devastating to the 1.4 million people who live in the region.
