It's finally over. The 16 day GOP government hostage situation has ended. Yesterday evening, I voted with 284 of my colleagues to fund our entire government and raise the debt ceiling.
I joined CBS58 and MSNBC's Chris Hayes to discuss post shutdown sentiments.
The GOP Government Shutdown risked our housing recovery, our economic recovery and the overall well-being of American families. It has become clear that the GOP is a victim of its own gerrymandering success. Despite this unfavorable truth, those with positive conviction will continue to fight for the American people. I am pleased that the reasonable House Members prevailed.
Although the impasse has finally ended after 16 days of partisan action, we must remember that this dysfunction should have never occurred. As Members of Congress, it is our privilege and our obligation to represent our country above our respective parties. This Congress has failed.
In spite of ongoing frustration, hope remains. The legislation signed into law last night calls for a bipartisan and bicameral negotiating group to address our budget differences. I implore my colleagues on this budget team to come together in a good faith effort.
We must stop operating from one manufactured crisis to the next. You deserve better. Rest assured that as long as I am your Member in Congress, I will do all I can to fight for you.
As always, please reach out to my Milwaukee office (414-297-1140) or Washington, DC office (202-225-4572) should you need assistance or have a legislative concern.
My very best,
Gwen
