Van Hollen Statement on Passage of the Bipartisan Agreement to Open the Government and Avert Default

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on House passage of the bipartisan agreement to open the government and avert default:

"Tonight, democracy was finally allowed to work its will -- as a result, we have finally reopened the government and averted a disastrous debt default. The lesson to be learned from this shameful episode is that shutting down the government and threatening the full faith and credit of the United States is not a strategy to force your agenda.

"Now we turn our attention to the budget conference committee, which Democrats have long advocated for. As part of that discussion, I will continue to advocate to boost job growth, make key investments in infrastructure, replace the sequester, and reduce the long-term deficit in a balanced way. I hope that my colleagues will come to the negotiating table to forge a commonsense agreement that is in the best interest of American families."
