Statement of Governor on the Death of Former Sen. Hunter B. Andrews

"I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the death of my good friend, former State Senate Majority Leader Hunter Andrews.

"Hunter was a towering figure in Virginia's modern political history, a gentleman and a leader of principle and candor. He served the Commonwealth in the Virginia Senate for 32 years-the last 10 as chairman of Senate Finance.

"He may have left the Senate a decade ago, but his influence continues to be seen today in Virginia's commitment to responsible fiscal management and the importance of a quality education for all of Virginia's children.

"It would be difficult to overstate Senator Andrews' positive impact on this state. His legacy endures through a generation of legislative colleagues and others who learned of responsible government and statesmanship from Hunter Andrews, and who now hold their own positions of leadership and public trust in the civic life of our Commonwealth.

"Even in retirement, Senator Andrews continued to serve the people of the Commonwealth with energy and distinction. I was pleased to appoint him to the Board of Visitors of his alma mater, The College of William and Mary.

"I will always be grateful for the advice he offered to me - both solicited and unsolicited. One had to earn the Senator's respect, and he did not suffer fools gladly. I am proud to have considered him a good friend.

"Lisa and I join all Virginians in expressing our heartfelt condolences to Cynthia, their children and grandchildren, and the rest of the Senator's family and friends."
