Statement

Dear Neighbors,

This week marks the second week of the Federal government shutdown. I am doing what I can to ensure we open our government up as soon as possible. In the meantime I am continuing to do my job by meeting with constituents and hearing their thoughts and concerns.

I started my week in Buffalo Grove and Mount Prospect, visiting both Farmer's Markets this past Sunday. It was great to see my neighbors and visit with the Mount Prospect Lions Club. I heard a lot from the people there about their concerns for their Social Security benefits as many of our seniors are on a fixed income.

On Monday, I met with local food banks, the Federal Postal Workers Coalition, the Retired Federal Employees Association, a Representative from the staff at Hines VA Medical Center, and Aunt Martha's Youth Services and Health Center. We discussed the impact the government shutdown has on their organizations, and how we might be able to work together to support them as they face increased pressures to provide social services and food assistance to residents of the 8th Congressional District.

On Tuesday, I sat down with Tony Romm from Politico to discuss cyber security and its important role in our nation's security. It was encouraging to see an audience full of people who want to advance this industry and keep our country competitive.

On Wednesday, I attended a roundtable discussion on Veterans' Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. Serving our nation's Veterans is one of the most important things I do, and it's important to continue working with all our partners in the Veteran community, throughout Congress and with Federal agencies to maintain our commitment to serving the men and women who have served us.

I also met with representatives from METRA to discuss ways to improve our railways in the district and how we can work together to get federal funding for important projects such as more commuter rail service in the 8th District.
