"I was extremely saddened to learn this morning about the death of civil rights activist Evelyn G. Lowery, the devoted wife of Reverend Joseph E. Lowery and the founder of Women's Organizational Movement for Equality Now, Inc. of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

"The organization, which she established in 1979, continues to support the rights of women, families, and children. In addition Ms. Lowery also established the Drum Major for Justice Awards to recognize men and women who are committed to social justice. My esteemed predecessor, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm was a recipient of the award in 1990.

"Evelyn G. Lowery has left a legacy of activism and leadership that will remain a part of our hearts and minds for generations to come and an example of the achievements that are possible when women participate in the life of our nation in service to others."
