Married on Saturday, Furloughed on Monday

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) spoke outside the Capitol about a Nevada constituent who contacted his District Office after he was furloughed as a result of the government shutdown.

Representative Horsford's remarks are below:

"Good morning. I'm Steven Horsford from Nevada's Fourth Congressional District, and I'm here to stand with my brothers and sisters in labor. I am a member of UNITE HERE and have been a member for eleven years before coming to Congress.

"And while there's no jobs report today from the Department of Labor because of this government shutdown, I want to give you a report from my district. In my district there are 1,100 workers who are furloughed from Nellis Air Force Base. There are some 11,000 workers throughout Nevada whose work is likely to be interrupted during the shutdown because House Republicans refuse to keep the government open.

"One of those employees is Alex, who is a Nevadan, who works at the Department of Defense as a contract employee. He got married on Saturday, and he got a furlough notice on Monday. Is that the Republican Party's idea of a honeymoon gift?

"So for Alex, who is starting a family and for so many other families across America, it's time for Speaker Boehner to bring a clean resolution to the floor that can pass with majority votes from Democrats and Republicans so that we can reopen out government and put our families back to work."
