Lujan Grisham Votes to Ensure Federal Employees Receive Retroactive Pay When Government Reopens

U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) today voted to ensure all federal employees receive back pay once the federal government reopens, regardless of their furlough status. The Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act (H.R. 3223), which Rep. Lujan Grisham co-sponsored, passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 407-0.

"The hardworking federal employees in New Mexico and across the country did not cause this government shutdown, and they should not be unfairly punished for House Republicans' callous irresponsibility," Rep. Lujan Grisham said. "While this bill certainly will provide peace of mind to furloughed workers, they still cannot get paid until the government reopens. For a family living paycheck-to-paycheck, that could result in a missed mortgage payment, unpaid bills or difficulty putting food on the table. America's dedicated federal employees deserve more than just back pay. They deserve to go back to work. That's why the House Republican Leadership should immediately allow a vote on the Senate-passed clean funding compromise so we can finally end this reckless government shutdown."
