Ayotte Votes to Ensure Military Can Be Paid if Shutdown Occurs

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today joined fellow Senators in voting unanimously to approve legislation to ensure that active duty, Guard, and Reserve service members can continue to be paid in the event of a government shutdown. The legislation also provides the Secretary of Defense with the authority to pay Department of Defense civilian workers - including those at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard - who are providing support to members of the Armed Forces.

"This bill helps ensure that active and reserve component members of our military, as well as civilian Department of Defense workers - including the dedicated workforce at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard - can receive the pay they have earned even if a shutdown occurs," said Senator Ayotte. "Our military men and women should not face uncertainty over their pay because of political dysfunction in Washington, and I continue to hope that a compromise can be reached to keep the government running and prevent a shutdown."
