Healthcare and Economic Development Funding Top Priorities
WASHINGTON, DC (3/3) During testimony before the House Budget Committee, Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) expressed her concern with President Bushs Budget proposal telling the committee, "...funding cuts will do substantial harm to economic development activities in rural areas."
"Of greatest concern is the shift of the Community Development Block Grant program," Capito noted, "Cities like Charleston and Martinsburg in my district could see significant reductions in economic development aid if we accept the reconfiguration of the CDBG program. These cities already experienced cuts in CDBG money last year, and further cuts could hinder the cities ability to provide important services and bring jobs to the community."
Capito would like to see economic development funded at the same level as they received during the last fiscal year to ensure ongoing activities can continue.
Capito also expressed concern that the consolidation of funding sources for Vocational Education programs would curb the flow of resources to West Virginia programs. In addition she would like to see additional funding for Veterans Healthcare, and the state run childrens healthcare program - SCHIP.
