House Republicans Advance Bills to Fund VA Benefits and National Parks

U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis joined her colleagues in the U.S. House to vote on individual bills funding National Park operations and veterans' benefits processing during the partial government shutdown due to a lapse in annual congressional appropriations. Since they required a two-thirds majority to pass, the Democratic Representatives decided to vote nay and defeat these bills. Another bill would have allowed the District of Columbia to use its own revenues to pay for schools and necessary services in D.C. during the partial shutdown. This follows the Senate's decision to refuse passage of the continuing resolution offered by the House on Monday night to stave off a partial shutdown of the federal government.

"This is a one issue deal: that the President and Members of Congress should live under the "law of the land', Obamacare, without a subsidy, just like the rest of the American people," said Rep. Lummis. "President Obama is exempt from Obamacare and Senate Democrats have chosen to keep their health care subsidy. I want to keep the government open and make Congress and the President subject to Obamacare. I cannot believe that Congressional Democrats would deny the American people's access to national parks, and prevent processing of the backlog of veterans' claims, just to keep their illegal Obamacare exemption. This is madness."
