Cotton Statement on Obama Administration's signing of the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty

Congressman Tom Cotton (R-Dardanelle) released the following statement after Secretary of State John Kerry signed the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty earlier today:

"From day one I have been firmly opposed to the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty. My colleagues and I have expressed our opposition to the Obama administration repeatedly. But Secretary Kerry's actions today indicate our pleas fell on deaf ears. This agreement contains several dangerous and controversial provisions seeking to regulate the global trade of conventional armaments.

"Many countries and international organizations lack respect for our second amendment rights. I fear they may use this treaty to limit gun-owners' rights in Arkansas and across the country. Further, it imposes certain restrictions that will limit America's ability to defend itself and its allies militarily.

"The onus is now on the Senate, who must ratify the Arms Trade Treaty with a two-thirds majority before it could be enforced by President Obama. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to stand up for Arkansans Second Amendment rights and oppose the Arms Trade Treaty when it comes before them for ratification."
