Cotton Statement on the Nutrition Reform and Work Opportunity Act of 2013

Statement

Congressman Tom Cotton (R-Dardanelle) released the following statement after today's vote on the Nutrition Reform and Work Opportunity Act of 2013:

"I'm pleased that the House passed a food-stamp reform bill today that protects both Arkansas taxpayers and the neediest Americans. Under President Obama, food-stamp spending has exploded by nearly $300 billion dollars and enrollment has more than doubled.

"This reform bill makes several changes to food-stamp eligibility rules that will save billions of dollars, encourages work and personal responsibility, and ensure those most in need receive the aid they need. Most important, it imposes work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents. It also eliminates, for example, the outrageous policy of paying bonuses to state governments that enroll more people in food stamps.

"Also, for the first time in generations, the food-stamp program isn't tied needlessly to farm programs. I'm proud that the House passed a genuine farm bill earlier this year and now has reformed the food-stamp program. I urge the Senate to consider both bills swiftly to provide farmers the certainty they need and to protect Arkansas taxpayers and those in need."
