Sinema, Gabbard Partner to Protect Military Pay in Event of Shutdown

Today, Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema (AZ-9) and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-2) introduced the Military Pay Protection Act, H.R. 3187, a bill to ensure active servicemembers and their families will continue receiving pay in the event of a government shutdown. H.R. 3187 will also ensure funding for National Guard units assisting in disaster recovery

"The destructive gridlock in Washington threatens the stability and security of Arizona's military families," said Sinema. "Our legislation ensures certainty for the men and women whose service keeps us safe daily. Our military families should be protected from Congress' irresponsible political games. We're calling on Congress to do the right thing and pass H.R. 3187."

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, a Military Police Company Commander with the Hawaii Army National Guard said, "A politically driven government shutdown hurts our economy, our hard-working families, and our military. While the best outcome would be to work together to find a solution and avoid a damaging government shutdown that will hurt all of our federal employees, this bill is a first step toward ensuring our troops and their families do not become victims of this unnecessary shutdown. Those who are serving and sacrificing for our nation should not face uncertainty at home about whether they will be able to feed their families or pay their mortgage."

In the event of a government shutdown, H.R. 3187 will guarantee uninterrupted funding for servicemembers' pay; domestic National Guard disaster relief and recovery missions; and will allow paychecks to continue to critical civilian workers deployed in combat zones or doing jobs critical to supporting military operations.
