Huffman: "Pleased Congress has temporarily extended Secure Rural Schools, a program vital for North Coast counties, schools, students, and teachers"

Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) applauded the one-year extension of the Secure Rural Schools program, safeguarding critical funding for North Coast counties. The Secure Rural Schools program was created in 2000 as a way to compensate rural counties whose revenues were reduced by federal policies that limited the amount of logging allowed on federal land.

"I'm pleased Congress has temporarily extended Secure Rural Schools, a program vital for North Coast counties, schools, students, and teachers," Congressman Huffman said. "Many of the rural counties I represent rely on this funding, and I will continue to work towards a sustainable long-term solution."

The legislation has now passed the House and Senate and will be sent to the White House for approval. Last week, Congressman Huffman voted against a bill that would have irresponsibly tied Secure Rural Schools payments to arbitrary and mandatory timber harvest quotas.
