Stutzman on Arms Trade Treaty: "United Nations Has Neither the Moral Authority Nor the Legal Capacity to Undermine the Second Amendment"

U.S. Congressman Marlin Stutzman, the founder and chairman of the Republican Study Committee's Second Amendment Initiative, issued the following statement today condemning the Obama Administration's agreement to sign the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

"The United Nations has neither the moral authority nor the legal capacity to undermine the Second Amendment. The United Nations Arms Trade Treaty jeopardizes the rights of law-abiding Americans and sets a dangerous precedent. By signing this broad and ideologically-driven treaty, the Obama Administration continues its crusade against the individual right to keep and bear arms. As a legislator and a gun owner, I urge my colleagues in the Senate to reject this misguided and dangerous treaty."

Background:

Today, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry signed the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). A two-thirds majority would be needed in the Senate to ratify the treaty, which is the product of a nearly two decades-long campaign by gun-control advocates.

By the State Department's own admission, the ATT is "ambiguous." The treaty defines none of its terms and the scope of the agreement includes "small arms" which covers law-abiding citizens privately owned firearms.
