Lujan Grisham: House Republicans Have Become a Wholly Owned Subsidiary of the Tea Party

Statement

Date: Sept. 20, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01), a member of the House Budget Committee, today released the following statement after voting against H.J.Res. 59, House Republicans' continuing resolution that risks a government shutdown unless Congress defunds the Affordable Care Act:

"It's official: House Republicans have become a wholly owned subsidiary of the Tea Party. Their threat to shut down the government unless we prevent uninsured Americans from getting the coverage they need under the Affordable Care Act is absolutely irresponsible and is an abdication of their responsibility as elected representatives. My Republican colleagues themselves readily admit that this effort to defund the Affordable Care Act is futile. We should stop playing political games that would sabotage the American economy and get back to work creating jobs."
