Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement after meeting with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Washington, D.C.:
"Today, I welcomed President Mohamud back to Congress. The president met with members of Congress to update them on developments in Somalia and the region. President Mohamud was also the keynote speaker at a Woodrow Wilson International Center event on Somalia today, where he discussed his commitment to represent all Somalis and build on the progress of the past year.
"Since the United States recognized Somalia earlier this year, the international community has renewed its commitment to Somalia, including the New Deal for Somalia Conference hosted by the European Union this week.
"Maintaining a working relationship with Somalia and President Mohamud is important to the communities of the Fifth Congressional District and I remain committed to help build a strong U.S. -- Somali relationship."
