Ellison Statement On Framework To Eliminate Syria's Chemical Weapons

Statement

Date: Sept. 15, 2013
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Issues: Defense

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement today after the United States and Russia agreed on a framework to place Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles under international control:

"The agreement reached yesterday between the United States and Russia is a welcome step to ensure Bashar Al-Assad cannot commit another massacre against innocent civilians using chemical weapons. While difficult to implement, the disarmament of the regime's chemical weapons stockpiles must happen as soon as possible. I am relieved that Secretary Kerry's aggressive diplomatic efforts resulted in this agreement and that the use of force could be averted. Every effort should be made to investigate whether this agreement can lead to a broader political negotiation that would lead to Assad's departure and an end to the violence in Syria."
