Peters Statement on Labor Day

Statement

Date: Aug. 30, 2013

U.S. Representative Gary Peters today recognized the proud legacy of Michigan workers and reiterated the need for Michigan to lead our country in building a strong middle class. His statement for the Labor Day holiday follows:

"As we spend time with friends and family this holiday weekend, I hope everyone will take pride in Michigan's legacy and leadership in building our middle class and in the steps we are taking through small business, advanced manufacturing, and a talented and innovative workforce to build a bright new future.

"My father was a public school teacher for more than 30 years and my mother worked as a nurse's aide. They instilled in me the importance of working hard, playing by the rules, and public service so that our next generation always had the promise of a better life.

"Michigan helped make the American Dream possible, and no one works harder than Michigan workers. Labor Day is a reminder of why we need to support the right of workers to collectively bargain for better wages and benefits that support our families. To build a middle class that's strong again, we must invest in our workers, celebrate our entrepreneurship, and continue to drive our nation to new levels of innovation and economic opportunity."
