Cassidy Corrects Obama Administration Healthcare Deceptions

Statement

Date: Aug. 28, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) urged the Obama Administration to retract its claim that Obamacare limits on consumer out-of-pocket costs are the first of their kind and that they'll make healthcare more affordable. He released the following statement:

"The facts are overwhelmingly against the President. In 2003, Congress passed the Medicare Modernization Act, which introduced high-deductible health plans with limits on out-of-pocket costs to consumers. Enrollment in these affordable plans went from 1 million in 2005 to 15.5 million in 2013. According to Health Affairs, the growth of these plans to half of all employer-sponsored insurance policies could save us $57 billion annually.

"Instead of effective reforms like the MMA, the President is concentrating healthcare power in Washington. This is causing dramatic premium hikes in the individual and employer insurance markets. Furthermore, he can't even claim his out-of-pocket cost limits are working, since that provision of Obamacare was delayed. These facts make clear that we need to replace Obamacare with patient-centered reforms which lower costs and increase access to health coverage."
