Peters Statement on 48th Anniversary of Medicare

Statement

Date: July 30, 2013

To celebrate the 48th anniversary of Medicare being signed into law today, U.S. Representative Gary Peters vowed to keep fighting against attacks to privatize the program and end the guaranteed benefit for seniors. He is deeply committed to ensuring that Michigan seniors and their families have access to affordable, quality health care through Medicare.

Peters said: "Medicare is a American value, and I am proud to honor the 48th anniversary of this important program that has helped millions of our seniors retire with dignity. It is hard to imagine the difficulty Michigan seniors and their families faced before Medicare helped make health care affordable, but unfortunately we continue to see attempts to privatize Medicare and end this critical guaranteed benefit. We cannot balance the budget on the backs of Michigan's seniors. I am committed to ensuring that Medicare is protected, and I will continue to stand up for Michigan seniors and middle class families by fighting any attempts to undermine this program."
