Statement
Dear Neighbors,
This past weekend, I held a Congress at Your Corner event in Glendale Heights. I look forward to these events because I get to hear feedback and concerns from constituents throughout the eighth district. I will be holding many Congress at Your Corner events throughout the August recess, so please check my website for new dates, times and locations. I would love to hear from you.
This week in Washington, I participated in National Journal's Celebrating Progress: How Women Are Changing the World event. The panel I was a part of, "Challenging the Status Quo: Women in Politics" discussed how women can continue breaking glass ceilings in the government arena. It was inspiring to be surrounded by such a smart and successful group of women.
I also spoke on the House floor demanding that we pass fair, practical and humane comprehensive immigration reform. You can watch the clip of my speech here.
In a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing regarding how financial reform affects community banks, I asked about CFPB's proposal to adjust the qualified mortgage rules -- and what the impact would be on these banks. Community banks are absolutely critical to the economic well-being of our communities -- and they operate on a very different business model than large banks. It is imperative that we ensure that financial regulations respect those differences and do not place small banks at a disadvantage.
Later in the week, I attended a forum on tax reform. I support the manufacturing industry and programs that will make their businesses thrive -- including exports to foreign markets. I am looking forward to debating tax reform with my colleagues in the House, and amending our tax code to serve the people's best interests.
Lastly, I got the chance to speak with a group of ambitious young leaders at the National Young Leaders Conference. It was inspiring to see so many young people interested in serving our country.
