Congresswoman Duckworth and Representative Nekritz Hold Roundtable on SNAP Cuts and Hunger

On Monday, August 19, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) and State Representative Elaine Nekritz (D-Northbrook) hosted a Roundtable Discussion on potential cuts to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) & hunger. The event served as an opportunity for Congresswoman Duckworth, Representative Nekritz, organizations combatting hunger and residents of the 8th Congressional District to discuss the future of SNAP and hunger disparities facing Illinois and the nation.

"SNAP funding and hunger issues are extremely important to me, because I know what it's like to be a young person while your family is on food stamps," said Duckworth. "We need to work toward dispelling stereotypes about Americans using the SNAP program, and need to make sure that we deal with the potential cuts when Congress is back in session," Duckworth said.

Earlier this year, Duckworth voted against the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013 (FARRM Act). The legislation would make drastic cuts of $20.5 billion to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) over 10 years. The hyper-partisan bill failed by a vote 194-235, with 62 members of the majority voting against it.
