Cassidy Statement on Student Success Act

Statement

Date: July 19, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: K-12 Education

Today, Congressman Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) joined the House of Representatives in supporting H.R. 5, the Student Success Act. The bill passed today would reauthorize and improve the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (currently known as No Child Left Behind), by supporting more effective teachers, empowering parents, and restoring local control by reducing the federal role in our nation's classrooms.

"It's clear that when it comes to our children's education, parents and teachers, not Washington, know what is best. In a few short years, the administration has circumvented Congress to advance its education agenda by coercing states into adopting Common Core Standards in exchange for waivers and grant money. The Student Success Act empowers states and local education authorities by preventing the Secretary of Education's from inappropriately influencing state decisions to adopt common standards or assessments.

"I also strongly supported the adopted amendment offered by Representatives Cantor and Bishop that would allow Title I funds to "follow-the-student" to a public or charter school of their choice. This would help to spur greater competition among schools and ensure opportunities afforded by federal Title I funds support a child regardless of where they chose to go to school."
