Schiff Resolution Condemns Arrest of Ayman Nour

WASHINGTON, DC - Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) introduced a resolution today condemning the arrest of Egyptian opposition leader Ayman Nour. The resolution urges Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to reconsider attending the G-8/Arab League ministerial meeting in Cairo on March 2-3 unless Ayman Nour is freed.

Ayman Nour was arrested January 29th. He is the leader of the Al Ghad party, which is calling for greater democracy and freedom in Egypt.

"Today we call on Egypt to release Mr. Nour and return to the path towards democracy," said Schiff. "The Egyptian government is a longstanding friend of the United States and has been a successful partner in promoting peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. But our friendship cannot stand in the way of American efforts to promote democracy in the Middle East."

Schiff was joined by Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA), Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), and Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-NY).

Congressman Schiff is the co-founder of the Democratic Study Group on National Security and a member of both the House Judiciary and International Relations committees. He represents California's 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
